A Dream about the Nuclear Destruction of Tel Aviv

The Nuclear Destruction of Tel Aviv

This dream occurred in 1999 or 2000 around the time I was with B who is an Israeli.

B and I are standing on the roof of the apartment building in which I lived at the time in West Hollywood, CA. In the dream, we were living together as lovers in a common household. As I look over the city, however, I notice it is not Los Angeles, but Tel Aviv. I had visited there in 1986 so I was aware of what it looked like. From various quarters of the city loud Arabic language music blares. It seems the Arabs are celebrating some event. I experience a sense of foreboding and doom.

Suddenly, there's a horrible sight in the sky; a flash of light in the distance followed by the appearance of a dirty looking, smoky mushroom cloud. Then we hear a horrid, sick rumbling. After this, there are several of these explosions each one getting closer and closer to the city. I look across the street to a parking lot. There is a small female child standing next to a shopping cart who begins to cry as a result of the approaching explosions. It is a heart-wrenching sight and is accompanied by a realization which I somehow know everyone in the city is simultaneously having: everything has changed and the world and nature will never be the same. I cannot describe the truly awful nature of the feeling induced by this realization and the additional knowledge that .... we were all doomed.

Nevertheless, B and I decide to flee. He rushes back into the rooftop apartment to get a pet. I head down the stairwell to get to the car. The stairwell is dark and shakes and rattles along with the whole building. I arrive at the entrance to the building where there is a door with safety glass, the kind with wire in it that keeps it from shattering. I look out into the street. There is a powerful wind blowing the people all over, lifting up objects, getting stronger, even beginning to throw cars around. And all the while the sound of the explosions growing ever louder and closer. This it I think. Suddenly there is an explosion close to the city a car flies toward the door and all goes black.
